The original, standard test for inclusion of a painter or graphic artist in Section 1 was (a) inclusion of a painter or graphic artist in The Yale Dictionary of Art & Artists by Erika Langmuir & Norbert Lynton (L&L); or (b) the reproduction of at least one illustration in an authoritative key text.   Here the titles have been placed in Bold type.   Where illustrations were very numerous, the cut off point was, set at two or more illustrations in the text, e.g. in Gerdts1984.    Other artists were included if they appeared particularly interesting or notable & other artists were excluded  where, although itemised in the Yale Dictionary, (i) they are modern artists who only painted for a short period before  turning to other art forms, or (ii) they belonged to categories that have been regarded as over represented.   The latter group included some Italian Renaissance & Baroque artists in the Yale Dictionary who are accorded less than half a column & coded.  However, this approach has turned out to be impracticable because of the sheer volume of work involved in its completion, Hence the test for inclusion in Section 1 has now been revised & tightened.  Painters are now excluded if

(a) they have less than a two-star rating in the Yale Dictionary:
(b) they are not mentioned or itemised in one of the following key sources:

Brown & Rankin A Short History of Italian    Painting providing they were pre-Romantic
Moffit The Arts in Spain
Lucie-Smith A Concise History of French
Painting
The Oxford Dictionary of Modern & Contemporary Art, providing they qualify as post 1900 painters
The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art & Artists
1001 Paintings You Must See Before You Die

(c) they do not have at least one image of a painting reproduced in Jeremy Howard’s East European Art

However, painters which would otherwise be excluded were included (i) where they were British or American, &/or two or more images are to be found in the Grove Dictionary

Moreover, some artists were included simply because the potential entry was complete or required little or no work.  Moreover, some notable artists which would otherwise have been ignored were included because of their interest, e.g. Joe Tucker, Rex Whistler & Mihaly Zichy
